Johann Heinrich Voss

In 1781 a new German translation of the Odyssey appeared, by Johann Heinrich Voss[1]. Interestingly here, the author first chooses to translate the second epic of Homer. Indeed, most translators start with the Iliad because it is the first epic written by Homer. Here, it was not until 1793 that he wrote the Iliad. His translation is, according to Goethe, “paralyzed by philological concerns.”
